What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding, sometimes referred to as tooth bonding, is a cosmetic dentistry technique. This process involves the application of bonding material onto the surface of the tooth. The composite resin used can be shaped, polished and coloured to blend in with the surrounding teeth.
It’s a procedure that only takes one appointment with your dentist. The tooth can be prepared, the composite materials applied and shaped, then hardened with a special light which cures the resin so that it permanently bonds to the tooth.
Both composite bonding and composite veneers are cosmetic dental procedures used to change the appearance of teeth, but there are key differences between them. Composite bonding refers to the direct application of a tooth-coloured material to your existing teeth, in order to repair chips or cracks — an economical option for individuals looking for quick fixes. Composite veneers involve the application of thin shells over existing teeth; this choice can change the shape, size and overall look of one’s smile. Both options usually take only one appointment to complete, though multiple appointments may be necessary depending on the complexity and scope of work desired.

Due to each patient’s unique goals, a final quote can only be obtained after a full consultation and assessment — packages for multiple teeth and bigger smile designs are available to discuss with our dentists. The composite veneers process
Checking if you are the right candidate
This depends on the amount of tooth structure that needs to be changed or replaced. If your dental health is more serious, then more advanced dentistry may be required. For successful bonding, we need to ensure there is no tooth decay and teeth and gums are healthy to ensure there will be no limitation to the success of the bonding. Come in for your Check up & Clean appointment — all records will be taken and we can discuss options in more detail. Alternatively, we offer Cosmetic Consultations, where our dentists will go through your options and estimated costs. A New Patient exam will ideally still be required prior to starting your cosmetic journey.
Selecting shade
Selecting the right shade is essential. For the best results, our dentist may require you to get your teeth whitened as this will allow for a more harmonious finish for when you maintain your teeth whitening. Your dentist will pick the right shade to ensure the composite veneers fit in well with the rest of your teeth — and will work with you here to ensure you pick the shade and are happy with it before deciding and confirming.
Digital Smile Design
Depending on the complexity of the case, a digital smile design is created to help achieve the ideal shape of your new composite veneers. An injection moulding technique is sometimes used as well. Costs for this stage will be discussed at your initial appointment.
Preparation of your teeth
The tooth surface at this appointment is carefully prepared by cleaning and abrading the surface; this technique makes the surface a bit rougher so the bonding material adheres well. A conditioning adhesive liquid is then applied before the resin is sculpted and moulded into its correct shape. Finally, an ultraviolet blue light is used over the resin to help solidify the material. The composite is then polished and trimmed to give you the desired smile. Note that tea, coffee, cigarettes, wine and other staining substances can easily stain resin material — avoid staining foods and drinks for the first 48 hours after the procedure.
Wearing your night splint
In most cases, a night splint will be recommended to protect your new composite veneers or bonding to help reduce fractures.
The composite bonding process
During the process, a white filling material is applied to the tooth surface, where it is moulded and smoothened until it fits snugly. This tooth-coloured composite resin closely resembles and blends in with the appearance of your real teeth. The resin is then hardened with a special curing light to achieve full strength and durability. Afterward, if necessary, trimming and polishing of your new restoration is done to ensure your smile looks natural.
