What is a dental crown?

dental crown or tooth crown is a custom-made small cap placed over a tooth to cover chips, cracks, damage, and other dental issues. The customised crown resembles your natural teeth in shape, colour, and texture — it not only covers and protects your tooth but also strengthens and reinforces it. When the structure of your tooth begins to weaken due to decay, it increases the risk of gum disease and infection, and requires protection.

Why do you need dental crowns?

Same-day crowns, in a single visit

Most of our single and multiple crowns are designed, milled and fitted in one visit using our in-house CEREC 3D (CAD/CAM) technology. We take a digital scan — no goopy impressions — design your crown on screen, then mill it from a solid ceramic block right here in the studio, so you leave with your permanent crown the same day.

STEP 1 · SCAN & DESIGN

We prepare the tooth and take a fast, precise 3D digital scan, then design your crown on screen for an exact fit, shape and shade.

STEP 2 · MILLED IN-STUDIO

Your crown is milled from a single block of high-strength ceramic in our in-house CEREC unit while you relax — usually in under an hour.

STEP 3 · FITTED SAME DAY

We check the fit, bite and colour, then bond your permanent crown in place — no temporary crown and no second appointment.

For some situations — certain highly aesthetic front teeth, specific materials or more complex work — a traditional crown crafted at our trusted dental lab over two visits is the better choice. We’ll always guide you to what’s right for your tooth.

Tooth crown cost Melbourne

Generally $1,900 to $2,500 or more per tooth. If you have private health insurance with dental coverage, you may be eligible for a rebate that reduces your out-of-pocket expenses — check with your provider. We also offer flexible payment plans.

CEREC 3D · SAME-DAY TECHNOLOGY

Your crown, designed and fitted in one visit

Using in-house CEREC 3D digital scanning and milling, we craft a precise, natural-looking ceramic crown while you wait — so most single and multiple crowns are completed in a single appointment, right here in Preston.

One appointment

Scanned, milled and bonded the same day — no second visit and no time in a temporary crown.

No goopy impressions

A quick, comfortable digital scan replaces messy impression trays — gentler and far more accurate.

Precision digital fit

Your crown is designed on screen and milled to micron accuracy for a natural bite and seamless margins.

Strong, natural ceramic

Milled from a solid block of tooth-coloured ceramic — strong, hard-wearing and colour-matched to your smile.

Prefer or need a lab-crafted crown? For certain highly aesthetic or complex cases we still use our trusted dental lab over two visits — we’ll always recommend the best option for your tooth. All treatments carry risks; see our treatment risks page

Types of dental crowns

The type of crown recommended for you will depend on the location of the tooth, your personal preferences, and your budget. Your cosmetic dentist can help you choose the best option for your needs.

Porcelain crowns

Popular because they can be matched to the colour of your existing teeth — a good option for visible teeth.

Metal crowns

Made of various metals, such as gold or silver — durable and long-lasting.

Ceramic crowns

Made of a type of dental porcelain that is both strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Zirconia crowns

Made of a strong and durable ceramic material that is resistant to chipping and cracking.

Composite resin crowns

Made of a tooth-coloured composite resin material that is bonded to the tooth.

Generally, the cost of a dental crown can range from $1,900 to $2,500. However, it also heavily depends on the individual circumstance and how the procedure will take place. We aim to keep our prices accessible so everyone has the opportunity to access premium dental health care when they need it most. For more information on pricing, contact our team today.

There are two main steps: first, getting your crown customised in our lab — when this is done, we remove the temporary crown fitted to your tooth. Secondly, when you are satisfied with the crown, we cement it in to provide you with a permanent solution.

On average, dental crowns can last anywhere between 5 to 15 years. The life of your crown depends on how well you look after it — including how much wear and tear it takes and your dental habits. Follow good oral hygiene practices to ensure your crowns last as long as possible.

A dental crown could be needed for a range of situations, including protecting a weak tooth from decay, holding together parts of a cracked tooth, or restoring a tooth that has already been broken. Crowns are also suitable as a cosmetic option or to mend fillings that have been fractured. Similarly, you will need a dental crown if you have undergone a root canal procedure.

Porcelain or ceramic crowns are the most popular choice when it comes to wanting a natural look. Porcelain is great for matching your natural set of teeth in shape, size, and colour. They don’t utilise any metal parts — great for teeth restoration procedures.
